Web copywriting

WEB COPWRITING IS DIFFERENT!

Writing for the Web is very different from any other kind of copywriting. When I finally realized the many differences, I made the transition from a good copywriter to – a great Web Copywriter.

At first I said, “Hey, I write great copy, I can write web copy no problem.”

What I found out when I wrote my first Website was a wake up call. I thought it was well written, and so did my client. Even a lot of other people thought it looked great, had good information, graphics, and even several good videos.

Unfortunately, it didn’t do much other than sit there looking good for people who were sent to it. It was not bringing in business, generating client leads, or sales and revenue. That’s when I started researching and studying successful Websites, and seeking out experts in the Web copywriting field.

I quickly found out you can no longer just cut and paste copy from old brochures, advertisements, commercials, and other collateral material onto a website. It’s about writing in a space that can transform whole new markets. I realized content is not about writing to a broad demographic, its about writing to a smaller more tightly-defined audience and viewer.

KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE AND VIEWERS!

You must first completely understand and know who you are talking to.

Your viewers want to know and feel that you are writing to them, and only them. It’s a much more personal medium, and they need to know you are an expert and knowledgeable about what you say.

You must speak in your viewer’s language, and speak in a friendly conversational tone. Let them emotionally know you understand their needs. You must know what viewer’s want, and the emotions, buzz words and phrases your readers use that press their buttons, so they are compelled to press a website button, and purchase your products, services, or information.

Also, a Web copywriter needs to use the right kind of Keywords and SEO research to position your website for optimum exposure.

THIS MEDIUM BELONGS TO ITS USERS!

Starting in 1979 the internet had nothing to do with business, and was not created for commercial purposes. It was not about companies, or making money. It was a place where people could connect and share information, opinions and ideas.

Other major media belonged to companies such as TV, Radio and Print. In these genres viewers don’t get to participate or use these mediums, they just watch or read them passively.

A Web Copywriter must be ‘user-centric’ when they write for the web. You can’t just use the same old ‘company-centric’ copy, brochures, or other past printed material. You must write totally for your web viewers in their language.

YOUR CUSTOMERS PARTICIPATE IN YOUR MARKETING!

Your viewers and customers will rate you, critique you, tell everyone on the World Wide Web what they think about you.  There is little room for hyperbole, exaggeration or mistakes.

A Web copywriter must write with a new sense of awareness and respect for the reader. We are not writing “at” a passive audience. The web is a shared and participatory medium.

MAKE IT EASY TO FIND THINGS ON YOUR WEBSITE!

You are writing to a task-oriented audience. The viewer has something very specific in mind when they come to the web. They want to find something, or do something.

You must let them know you have what they are looking for quickly and simply. Help them find what they are looking for with minimal hassle.

It’s like going to the store. You know what you want and start looking for it. When you find it you make sure you’re happy with the price, then you take it to check out.

Most visitors arrive at a site already knowing what they want. It’s a Web Copywriter’s job to help the viewer find the right page as quickly as possible, only then do we sell.

PROSPECTS DEMAND RELEVANCE AND QUICKLY!

You must be very focused on the viewer’s needs. Don’t start, or end a page, with introductory or very general information, get right to the point.

Focus on WIIFM, “What’s In It For Me?”You must jump straight to the meat of the matter and make it urgent, and directly relevant to the interests of your viewer.

There are many other reasons that web copywriting is different from other mediums, and the expert Web Copywriter knows what they are. It takes years of doing it, and experiencing it to become good at it.

The above are just some of the reasons it’s important  to hire a web copywriter for your website.  Don’t hire just any copywriter, use a professional Web Copywriter.
